“Photonic Crystals” occur in nature through structural coloration and animal reflectors. The photonic crystals or lattices appear in various natural iridescent materials, feathers, and the scales of some animals like Chameleons. These nanocrystals within a superficial thick layer of dermal iridophores shift color as the skin of a chameleon stretches and moves.
